sworn under ¹100. Excerpts as follows.
I Abraham Fogwill...Miller..of sound mind but weak in body do hereby execute
this writing contained in one sheet of paper as my last will and testament as
follows, I give and bequath unto my wife Nancy all my leasehold estate for and
during her natural life. I also give and bequeath all my goods and chattels
unto my said wife Nancy for and during her natural life, and after her decease.....
I bequeath to my son John my watch, silver buckles and best bed. I bequeath
unto my son Caleb a bed and bedstead a ...table, green chairs and closthes box.
I bequeath to my daughter in law Harriett a bed, bedstead and curtains. I bequeath
to my daughter Nancy my double mahogany drawers, large kitchen table and clock,
the bed bedstead and curtains....such she my daughter Nancy usually lies on a
round mahogany table glass buffet and receptacle green fender mahogany waiter
and green two arm chairs two square back chairs and dressing table large silver
table spoon and three of the best tea spoons and silver tea tongs and wash stand
basin and jug half a dozen of china and china bowl and the long set of china.
I bequeath unto my daughter Mary the drawers with the glass in it and the two
leaf dining table and looking glass and one large silver table spoon and three
of the best silver tea spoons. the bureau bed and cap watch and mothers two arm
chairs, and I bequeath to my sons Abraham John and Caleb a half a dozen silver
tea spoons equally between them the remainder of the goods........of my said
wife to be divided equally between all my said sons and daughters. The land tax
I bequeath to my sons John and Caleb and to my daughters Nacy and Mary to be
equally divided. Provided also that in case my said wife should not consent
to reside with my said daughter Nancy then and in that case the articles herein
mention to be bequeath to my daughter Nancy to ...given her on my said wife leaving

Baker and ship owner... made this....29 Aug 1830 hereby revoking all former or
other wills by one heretofore made.. I give and bequeath unto my wife Jane Fogwill
all that ....... and dwelling house in which I now reside with the ............which
was bequeathed to me by my late father for and during the .... of her natural
life. Also I give and bequeath unto my said wife Jane Fogwill all the shares
and parts of shares of .... together with all and every .... interest in any
vessel or vessels that I ......of for and during the term of her natural life
to keep the same at sea for the benefit of situations for my children hereafter
to be mentioned but to have the gains and proceeds to and for her sole use and
benefit. I also give and bequeath unto my said wife Jane Fogwill all my household
goods and furniture together with all and every other property whether real or
personal that .......and whereas my eldest daughter Jane together with her husband
George Clements being unfortunately drowned at sea leaving to my care their daughter
Susan Clements I hereby charge my said wife Jane Fogwell with the proper care
of her ...so long as my said wife shall live.....after the decease of my said
wife Jane Fogwell I hereby give and bequeath to my said grandchild Susan Clements
the sum of Eighteen pounds per annum by way of annuity for and during the term
of her natural life to be made and levied from the rents and profits arising
from the aforesiad dwelling house and ... behind the same...after decease of
my wife..... i give divise and bequeath the whole of my property as aforesaid
whether real or personal unto my two sons John Fogwell and Samuel Fogwell and

Mariner made this 4 day of March in the year 1831 that is to say I do give and

my three quarters of the ship on/or?....... called the Charles and Elizabeth
belonging to the port of Dartmouth all and ............. the goods chattels and

|_ [from Scope and Content] Now residing in Stoke Gabriel. Born in
Halwell, at aged 10 yrs, he was bound apprentice by indenture there to [blank]
Hewett, farmer until aged 21 yrs, which he served out. Went to Brixham and bound
himself apprentice to John Fogwell, shipowner, for 3 yrs, to go to sea. He made
one voyage to Wales on the Schooner, Cumberland. Examinant went to sea for about
1 month, left his master's service and paid off his indenture of 5s. Went to
Shaldon, made an agreement with Thomas Weeks to serve for 3 yrs to learn the
trade of a mason for 9s per week. Served 9 months, then married. Harriet Knapman
of Stoke Gabriel, by whom he has three children viz Charlotte aged 3 yrs, Mary
Jane aged 18 months and Grace aged 18 months.

and apprenticed there to John Amery of Barn, when he was 10 he ran away, a year
later he apprenticed himself privately to Thomas Spurway of Dittisham, ferryman
for 5 years, after 4 years Spurway gave up the ferry and he paid ¹4 to end
the apprenticeship, he then lived with Mr Loyd of Galmpton, Brixham for a year
and then Mr Edwards of Brixham at 4s a week for a year and then another 11 months,
then Mr Lakeman of Brixham by the month for 2 years, then George Fogwill, miller
of Brixham for 2 years by the month, then he came to Bovey and lived with his
father for 12 months, he then agreed with his father by the month at 2s 6d a
week for 12 months, during this time he married.
